Question relating to...

Microphone Preamp

Asked by: Kristy S

I know they range from class A, being the best, to D and maybe even lower, I dont know. Im trying to put together a nice home studio setup, and I realize my musical sound is only going to sound as good as its weakest point in the recording chain. Ive decided it might be wise to purchase a preamp, but I have heard many contradicting answers ranging from dont waste your extra cash on a more high end setup, you cant really tell much difference, to its like night and day, the sound quality difference. I intend to produce cd quality audio, but am trying to watch my budget. I plan on also purchasing a nice microphone, but dont have the cash to just drop on a whim. Any suggestions/info you can provide would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance

Personally I would avoid Class A (usually expensive and runs very warm) and Class D (sounds too digital/distorted for me). Class A/B is where most of the popular stuff is and it works great.

Some of the A/B stuff uses discrete circuits and others use ICs (chips). The units with chips are cheaper, but usually not as good sounding.

For CD quality, you would do fine with an inexpensive A/B setup. Try EBay for some decent used gear, this type of equipment last forever and rarely loses sound quality
