Microphone Preamp

I want to do some home recordings. Can anyone recommend a free digital 8-track simulator program or something else I can record with from a line out of a 16 channel mixer/preamp to my laptop?

Do I run the line into the microphone in-jack on my laptop? If anybody knows what I'm talking about, any help would be much appreciated. Thank
